1. Decide what your keywords are going to be….
Key words are the group of words or short phrases that a home-buyer might use to search for real estate. For example, initially a home-buyer might use a broad search phrase such as “Denver Real Estate” or “Columbus OH Real Estate”.
Eventually the home-buyer will narrow their search down to a much smaller geographic area such as a sub-division or neighborhood. That search might look like “Sloans Lake Neighborhood Denver Real Estate”. This grouping of words would be called the “key words” and a real estate professional who focused on a farm area (such as Sloans Lake Neighborhood) would want to have their site optimized for these key words.
Deciding what your keywords are going to be is one the most important decisions you will make. Since this article is focused on “simple” we are just going to talk about the keywords that appear in your title bar. In a future article we will discuss optimizing your entire website for keywords. Thus, for now write down the key farm areas/neighborhoods that you focus on—choose at least two and no more than four. We will use them in the next step.
2. Place the key words in the title tags of your webpage
The title tag is one of the key factors in helping you achieve a high search engine ranking. The words in your title tag are what is shown highlighted in a blue link when your site is listed on a search result page.
HTML is the language used to create web pages. Your web browser interprets the HTML on web pages and displays the page according to the HTML tags on the page. HTML tags begin with a “<” and end with a “/>”. A title tag is an HTML code snippet that creates the words that appear in the title bar of your Web browser. The title tag text would look something like: .
You chose your key words in step one; now you would just put those key words between the title tags on every web page on your website. In most cases you can just call the company who is hosting or who designed your website and have them do it for you. If you have access to your web pages then it is an easy matter of just copying and pasting the text. Place your new title tags at the top of the webpage between thetags, in this format:.
3. Get an important link to your website—Free….
Links from other websites to your website are probably the most important aspect affecting your search engine ranking. Google originated the method of using “inbound” links to a website as a measure of importance. Think of every link to your website as a vote in your favor. However, Google looks at more than just the quantity of links to your website.
More important than quantity is the quality of those sites which link to your website. So for example, a very popular site linking to your site is worth much more than a site with low traffic, i.e., low popularity. Another factor involved with links is the relevancy of the site linking to yours. Thus, another site that has similar content as yours or similar key words to your website, is worth much more than one that doesn’t.
Google uses the above mentioned criteria plus a number of other proprietary items to give each page on a website what is called a PageRank. PageRank is on a scale of one to ten. Most websites have a PageRank less than five and anything five or above is considered excellent.
Getting your website listed in highly ranked directories is a good way to begin building the PageRanking for your website. The most important directory to get listed in is the DMOZ or Open Directory project which has a PageRank of nine. Many of the large search engines including Google use DMOZ to populate their own directories. Thus, getting listed at DMOZ will essentially get you listed in multiple directories.
Here’s how to do it: Go to: http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/ You will see a list of states, click on the link that is your state. You will then see a list that says: “Counties, Localities, Metro Areas and/or Regions”. Click on the link that says “Localities”, which will now take you to a page with a horizontal list of letters. Click on the letter which is the first letter in the city that you work. You will then see a list of categories from “Arts and Entertainment” to “Weather”.
Click on the link that reads “Real Estate”. In larger metro areas you will probably see two links that read:“Commercial” and “Residential”. In smaller cities, you will see a list of real estate agents and you will be in the right place to add your link. If you see the link that reads “Residential“, click on it and then click on the link that reads “Agents”. Ok, you have reached your final destination and you should see a list of real estate agents in your area.
Now you get to add your link to the directory. At the top of the page you will see a link that reads “suggest URL”. Clicking on that link will bring up a form where you will type in the url of your website, the title for your website (which should include your name), and a short description. When you are finished, click the submit button at the bottom of the page and you are done! Congratulations, you are now on the way to improving your search engine results.
